Differences between neoprene, NBR and EPDM

In industry, choosing the right rubber is no small matter. Using an unsuitable material can lead to premature failure, loss of seal, chemical degradation, or even operational hazards. Among the most commonly used elastomers are... neoprene, he NBR (nitrile) and the EPDM, three materials with distinct properties that respond to specific needs.

Although all three belong to the family of industrial synthetic rubbers, their technical differences are crucial when selecting gaskets, packings, seals or sheets for industrial applications.

Neoprene (CR): balance and environmental resistance

Industrial neoprene is characterized by its excellent resistance to weathering, ozone, and UV radiation. This makes it an ideal choice for outdoor applications or humid environments. Its stability against aging is superior to that of nitrile, for example, allowing it to retain its elasticity for longer.

In mechanical terms, neoprene offers good resistance to abrasion and compression, so it is commonly found in sealing gaskets, insulation sheets, anti-vibration mounts, and industrial protections.

However, when contact with oils or fuels is constant, neoprene is not the best alternative. In that scenario, NBR usually offers better performance.

NBR (Nitrile): resistance to oils and hydrocarbons

NBR, also known as nitrile rubber, is the preferred material in applications involving direct contact with oils, fuels, greases, or hydraulic fluids. Its chemical resistance to hydrocarbons makes it indispensable in the automotive, petroleum, and heavy equipment industries.

Unlike neoprene, nitrile is not known for its weather resistance. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or ozone can cause it to deteriorate more quickly. Therefore, its use is generally limited to indoor or protected applications.

In industrial seals, hydraulic system gaskets, and pump seals, NBR is one of the most widely used options due to its excellent sealing capacity against industrial oils.
